How to avoid or remove Mac Defender malware in Mac OS X v10A phishing scam has targeted Mac users by taking them from safe websites to fake websites which tells them that their computer is full of viruses. The user is then offered Mac Defender “anti-virus” software to solve the issue.
Be careful because this “anti-virus” software is malware (or malicious software). The only purpose they made this program, is to get the user’s credit card information which may be used for disingenuous purposes. The most common names for this malware are MacDefender, MacProtector and MacSecurity.
Apple released a free software update (Security Update 2011-003) that will help to find and remove Mac Defender malware and any suspicions program automatically. We will also provide you with some solutions and step-by-step instructions on how to avoid or manually remove this malware throughout the article.
If any notifications about viruses, antivirus or security software appear on your browser. If the normal quit from the browser doesn’t work, then Force Quit the browser. If your browser automatically download his malicious software, cancel the installation process quickly.
If the malware has been installed, don’t enter your credit card information under any circumstances and follow this steps:
  1. Close the Scan Window.
  2. Launch Activity Monitor from the utilities folder in the Applications folder.
  3. Pick All Processes from the pop up menu in the upper right corner of the window.
  4. In the name column, look for the name of the app and select it (names include: MacDefender, MacSecurity or MacProtector.)
  5. Select quit from the Quit Process button in the upper left corner of the window and Quit Activity Monitor application.
  6. Open the Applications folder.
  7. Locate the app ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector or other name.
  8. Drag it to the Trash

iPhone volume buttons not working, fix

Several users have reported that volume buttons on the side of iPhone do not work, meaning their iPhones are not responsive when they want to lower or raise the volume. Follow these steps to troubleshoot volume issues on your iPhone. Please note that after performing each step, please test to see if your iPhone volume control problems is resolved.
  • Restart your iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button.
  • Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. (How to update your iOS version). This may resolve your issue.
  • Reset your iPhone by pressing and hold the sleep/wake button and the Home button together until you see the Apple logo
If the tips above don’t resolve your issue; check to see if you can adjust the volume at Settings > Sounds. If you can, it is likely that you have a hardware problem. You may want to have your iOS device checked at an Apple Store and have them take a look at it, especially If your device is still under warranty. You may also try the followings:
  • If you feel like the buttons feel mushy, try to clean by vaccuuming the volume buttons with a regular vacuum nozzle.
  • It may be that your buttons are stuck. Try to unstuck them by pressing volume up and down, for several times.
  • Perform a DFU restore. (Using DFU Restore to Solve iPhone Problems)
If your volume buttons are still not functioning properly, you may want to use an accessibility feature called Assistive Touch. This will let you control the volume using the touch screen. (How to use your iOS device without the home button)

Apple Offering iPhone Screen Repair

Dropped iPhones, more often than not, end up with broken screens and there was no system where these could be fixed. The only option was to replace the whole screen, which was so costly that consumers opted to throw the phone and buy a new one. But Apple recently announced that it would provide repair services for broken iPhone screens. This will come as a relief to some of the people who were unable to afford the existing screen replacement costs. People would rather move on to a new device rather than get the broken screen of their iPhones fixed. This particular initiative from Apple might change that trend.
Broken iPhone Screen
A worrying trend that Apple iPhone users were putting up with was the ‘cool’ cracked iPhone screen. Since the associated cost was so high, people put up with small to moderate cracks on the iPhone. This had reached such a level that people had gone to the extent of considering the broken iPhone screen as ‘cool’!
Repairs for $149
According to the latest reports, the new repair initiative by Apple will allow users to get the screens of their iPhones repaired for as less as $149. Before this drive was launched by Apple, repair outlets charged anything between $185 to $225, and sometimes more, for repairing the iPhone screen.
A few experts believe that this initiative by Apple is a little too late, but others believe that it is better late than never. We will have to see how people respond to this initiative by Apple.

iPhone Tip of the day, send call directly to voicemail.

Great little article I read today on everythingicafe, on how to send iPhone calls directly to voicemail. I thought some of you may enjoy this tidbit. Here are the down and dirty details.

  1. Press the power button once to silence the ringtone.
  2. Press the power button a second time to send the call directly to voicemail. When you do this, the caller won’t hear additional rings, instead being escorted to your voicemail.
